DAN BATZ

Dan Batz established himself as one of Governor Mifflin’s most prolific baseball talents, setting school records that demonstrate his exceptional all-around offensive excellence. As a three-year varsity starter, his name remains atop the program’s record books in several key categories, including Runs Scored (42), Hits in a Season (46), and RBI (35) all while leading his team to 22 total wins (3rd most in school history), a county championship final and a District 3 semifinal. His extraordinary batting average (.497) and power production (6 home runs) also place him among the top 10 performers in school history. As an All-County athlete in multiple sports (football, basketball, baseball), Dan was selected by Governor Mifflin coaches as the 2000 Cecil E King Award recipient. This remarkable high school career served as just the beginning of Dan’s distinguished baseball journey. At the University of Rhode Island, he compiled one of the most decorated collegiate careers in the institution’s history, culminating in his well-deserved induction into the URI Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. His collegiate accolades include Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year (2001), Atlantic 10 Player of the Year (2004), league leader in doubles (24) during his Player of the Year campaign, multiple All-America selections in his junior and senior seasons, and four career URI records: batting average, hits, doubles, and RBI and second in four more career categories. Dan’s exceptional talent attracted professional attention, leading to his selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round (178th overall) of the 2004 MLB Draft. He went on to compete for three seasons in professional baseball, further extending his impressive baseball legacy that began at Governor Mifflin.

KURT HENRY

Kurt has a long list of extraordinary contributions to the Governor Mifflin Baseball program, where he has made a significant impact both as a standout player and a dedicated coach. Kurt was a three-year varsity starter who served as the team’s catalyst from the leadoff position throughout his entire high school career. His exceptional play helped power Governor Mifflin to back-to-back County Championships in 1974 and 1975. His statistical achievements speak to his remarkable consistency and performance. He batted .464 in 1974 and .408 in 1975 collecting 26 hits and 29 hits respectively. He demonstrated exceptional speed while stealing 16 bases and scoring 28 runs during the 1975 season. Kurt’s commitment to Governor Mifflin baseball extends well beyond his playing days, as evidenced by his two decades of coaching dedication. Throughout his coaching tenure, he has developed players at multiple levels (Junior High, JV, and Varsity), served in various assistant coaching capacities, and currently contributes his expertise as a Varsity Assistant Coach, winning the first ever state title last year. Kurt’s unique perspective as both a championship player and long-term coach has helped shape multiple generations of Governor Mifflin baseball players.

STEVE MURRAY

Steve wasn’t just a player; he was a cornerstone of the team, radiating leadership both on and off the field. His play at shortstop was seemingly effortless, a testament to his natural athleticism and dedication to honing his craft. At the plate, he was a constant threat, a dependable hitter who could change the game with a single swing. His remarkable versatility and athletic prowess were evident in his decorated high school career, culminating in All-County honors in baseball, soccer, and basketball, and the prestigious Cecil E. King Outstanding Athlete Award in 1994, a testament to his all-around athletic ability. Following his exceptional high school career, Steve distinguished himself as a standout collegiate athlete at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he earned four varsity letters. His remarkable consistency at the plate culminated in an impressive career batting average exceeding .400. His collegiate excellence earned him prestigious recognition, including Player of the Year honors in 1998, which followed his three consecutive selections to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West first team from 1996 through 1998. After completing his distinguished playing career, Steve returned to his roots at Governor Mifflin, where he made significant contributions as both a teacher and coach before advancing into administration. His journey represents a full circle of excellence—from standout student-athlete to respected educator and leader within the community that helped shape him.

ED WILLIAMSON

Ed Williamson stands as the most successful coach in Governor Mifflin baseball history, compiling an impressive 263 victories during his distinguished 21-season tenure (1982-1999, 2003-2005). Under his leadership, the program achieved remarkable success, capturing three Berks County Championships and advancing to the District III semifinals in 1999. His coaching expertise developed numerous standout players, including multiple all-county selections and several who advanced to collegiate and professional baseball—most notably Dan Batz and Zach Lutz. This ability to nurture talent stemmed from his own experience as an exceptional player. As a Governor Mifflin student-athlete, Ed earned all-county recognition and established himself among the program’s offensive elites. His name remains prominent in the school record books across multiple statistical categories, including the prestigious 20-hit club, 20-walk club, 20-run club, and stolen base club. Following this outstanding high school career, he continued his athletic and academic journey at Juniata College, where he competed on the baseball team while earning his teaching degree. Beyond the diamond, Ed’s impact extended throughout Governor Mifflin High School during his three decades as a highly respected educator. As an AP U.S. History teacher, he influenced thousands of students, combining his passion for education with the same dedication and excellence that characterized his coaching career. His dual legacy as both an exceptional coach and inspirational teacher exemplifies the profound impact one individual can have on student-athletes.
